About Buenos Aires

tango-argentinaVolunteer in Buenos Aires and Gain Work Experience

The birthplace of tango, the ‘Paris of the South America’, and home to two of the most passionately supported football clubs in the world, Buenos Aires is a city rich with culture, excitement and adventure.

Culture vultures will be overwhelmed with a choice of art museums, street theatre, live jazz and café orchestras, and will love the theatres and bookshops of the Avenida Corrientes. The city is also home to the 19th century Teatro Colon, as well known for its stunning architecture as for the renowned opera and ballet performances it has hosted. By contrast, small folk clubs called peñas give visitors an insight into the music and dance of gaucho (cowboy) culture.

And then of course there is Tango… This musical form – and the sensual dance that accompanies it – was born in the working-class barrios of Buenos Aires. Let yourself be seduced by the voice of the Carlos Gardel, the Buenos Aires’ native whose talent as a composer and singer of Tango music, as well as his tragic untimely death in 1935, has earned him legendary status.

Buenos Aires has several universities and its 24 hour bars and cafes bear testament to its lively young population. You’ll find them sipping cocktails in chic bars in Palermo, or in the hip clubs of Puerto Madero. If you want to take things at a slower pace then enjoy a classic Argentinean dinner: the finest steak in the world accompanied by a lip-smackingly good Malbec wine!

puerto-madero-2-argentinaTap into the city’s youthful energy at a football match between rival Buenos Aires football clubs Boca Juniors and River Plate, where the passion off the pitch more than equals that of the soccer stars! By contrast the more glamorous atmosphere of a polo match at the Campo Argentino de Polo provides an up-close experience of this quintessentially Argentine aristocratic pastime. In fact if you have an appreciation of the finer things in life then you will delight in the style of the porteños (as Buenos Aires locals are known) – the Italian origins of many of its citizens are betrayed by their fondness for exclusive designer shopping and fine leather goods, as well as their sing-song accent.

Argentina is a country that has seen military government as well as several financial crises. Now from the vantage point of its stable and ever more prosperous present, Buenos Aires offers a perspective on the country’s tumultuous past.

accordian-argentinaThis past is brought to life when you walk with the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, who gather every Thursday in memory of their children and grandchildren who were ‘disappeared’ during the Dirty War (1976–1983), or when you stand below the balcony of of the Presidential Palace, la Casa Rosada, from which Evita Peron frequently addressed her supporters. The Parisian-style cafes of the Avenida de Mayo are often the scenes of of intense debate on the issues of the day – porteños take their politics seriously!

But this city is just the starting point for your South American Internship & Volunteer adventures!

Within easy reach of Buenos Aires you’ll find watersports at the beaches of Punto del Carmen, horse-riding on the Pampas, and boat-rides from the delta town of El Tigre. The beautiful Urugayan city of Colonia, a UNESCO world heritage site, lies just a ferry-ride away, across the River Plate estuary.

igasu-falls-argentinaFurther afield there are opportunities for whale watching, tours of the wine region, hiking in the Andes, and skiing in Bariloche. Make time for a trip to the dramatic landscape of Patagonia at the ‘end of the world’, or to experience the spectacular sight of the Iguazu Falls.

If you’re looking for a city with magical tales to tell then this is it – come and meet with its memorable characters, and write a part for yourself in its unfolding story…
