“If you have any interest in going into the business world, I would definitely recommend spending a semester in Cape Town to prepare yourself to face the challenges the world has to throw at you”

The program blends classroom-based and experiential learning by including a substantial fieldwork component – where students work side-by-side with local social entrepreneurs – which is linked with academic theory and regular mentoring sessions.

Courses are taught by UCT faculty and students receive a transcript from UCT, one of Africa’s leading teaching and research institutions, which recommends 18 transfer credits for the semester. The program involves a core course, Experiencing Entrepreneurship, plus two electives – Business in Context and Entrepreneurial Strategies, as outlined below:
BUS3040F Experiencing Entrepreneurship (Core Course)
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the key requirements, challenges, and experiences associated with initiating a business enterprise. The primary means of learning is experiential. Action-learning, through the Social Enterprise project, is underpinned by a series of lecture inputs and meetings with a mentor, Stuart Hendry, a lecturer in the School of Management Studies, who also convenes the Business in Context course students will take.
BUS4067F Business in Context
The objective of this course is to help students develop the intellectual skills required to study and understand key aspects of the global, local and African business environment and in particular the triple bottom-line of People, Planet and Profit. Students develop critical reasoning skills, including the ability to analyze, construct and present logical arguments, to research and understand key business issues and to form independent and research-based opinions about contentious issues of business theory and practice.
BUS4078F Entrepreneurial Strategies
Students in Entrepreneurial Strategies learn about routes to the creation and ownership of a venture and the subsequent paths a business may take. The course follows the identification of potential business ideas; feasibility testing; establishment of organizations; paths of business development; needs analysis; funneling market research; implementation strategies; and strategic assessment.
