My internship in Buenos Aires: Colorado Senior shares his experience

By Kate Rau

Josh Braun is back home in Colorado after completing his public policy internship in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Connect-123. His internship focused on sustainable development policy in Buenos Aires, as measured under the tenets of the UN sustainability goals. This fall Josh returns to the University of Colorado to kick off his senior year. He is studying International Affairs, Spanish and Russian.

We ask Josh about the highlights of his internship, and how it impacted his future career and education choices.

Tell us a bit about your internship. What was your work about?

I interned at the Provincial Government of Buenos Aires in the Department of Sustainability and Social Responsibility. The Department helps cities in Buenos Aires work toward sustainability goals, many of which come from the United Nations. It acts as an intermediary between the UN and the cites and provides resources and information on how to best work towards sustainability goals. The Department also works with international bodies such as ISO, the International Organization for Standardization.

Most of my internship was focused on sustainable development, and applying a specific ISO standard to municipalities in the province. This standard is a collection of indicators that help cities and municipalities evaluate their sustainable development progress. The process was much more difficult than I anticipated! However, it was incredibly gratifying to work on something that I found so interesting and that was making a tangible and positive impact on Argentina’s future.

What was the best part of your internship?
Aside from the incredibly warm and welcoming office environment, my experience at the University of Ezeiza was unforgettable. In my last week at the Government Office I met a woman who works with the Ministry of Education. After chatting about my internship and the time I’d spent abroad, she invited me to deliver a talk at the University of Ezeiza!

That was the highlight of my experience: I gave a talk to two university classes.
I spoke about my time here and the value of learning another language, how it can help to eliminate stereotypes and break down barriers. I shared how valuable it is to learn and understand a culture other than your own. After my talk, there was a question and answer session, and I was asked about everything – from my first time drinking mate to cultural differences between Argentina and the US, the process of learning a new language, and how to become bilingual.
It was an amazing feeling to share my experience and my insights with a group of engaged and motivated students. It felt like I was doing them a real service, and providing them with information that will hopefully motivate and inspire them on their own paths.
How did Connect-123 enhance your internship experience?

Connect-123 was great, from the planning stage of my internship months before I left, to finding me housing and a host organization. The whole process is very user-friendly and went smoothly. I especially liked the level of independence that Connect-123 provides. You have a safety net if things go wrong in any way, but you also have a level of independence that allows you to gain some real-life experience as an international student interning and working abroad.

What would you say to anyone considering an internship abroad?

Kate Rau

Kate is no stranger to international internships and studying abroad. After submitting her Honours thesis in French socio-linguistics and literature in 2003, she completed a program abroad in Reunion, where she learnt a lot about litchis, island-style living and French. She returned home with two degrees – one in journalism and one in French – and decided on a career in media. Fast-forward some 15 years later and Kate has enjoyed a few career highlights: She’s edited a number of consumer and trade magazine titles, she’s worked with some of the most influential international brands looking to save the planet, and she’s managed a full-house digital marketing agency in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Today Kate works as Marketing Manager for Connect-123 in Cape Town, which means she gets to share great stories about the excellent work we do every day.
