Creating Change: C-123’s International Scholarship Competition 2013

By Katie Arango

For this year’s scholarship competition, we’re looking for a video that demonstrates how you would use your international internship or volunteer experience to create change. Of course there are many interpretations for what this can mean – and we’re looking to hear yours!

Having an internship or volunteer experience abroad can be fascinating, challenging, stimulating, fun, exhausting, enlightening, rewarding, informative and exciting, and it usually leaves both ourselves and the place where we’ve worked changed in some way, for the better. Whether you think this international experience will create change within yourself, changing your attitudes or forcing you to question your previously held beliefs, or allow you to create change in the world around you, by leaving your mark on a new community, we want to help you get there.

So, quick, grab a camera: what change will you create?

2013 Scholarship FAQs:

Who can enter?
Anyone over 18! If you’ve already sent in an application to one of our internship or volunteer programs, feel free to enter the competition as well (if you win, we’ll refund what you’ve already paid!) Alumni are encouraged to enter too!

What type of internship or volunteer project can I have?
It’s up to you! As with all of our program participants, we want to know what you are interested in, and we’ll arrange a customized internship or volunteer program based on your background, skills and interests. We’ve got opportunities available in many different areas – from business to economic development to healthcare to human rights – and everything in between! Learn more about our placement process.

Where can I intern/volunteer?
You can choose to go to any one of our five international destinations – Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Shanghai, Barcelona or Dublin. Learn more about the international cities where we have programs here.

What are the deadlines?
All videos must be submitted by March 15, 2013. Winners will be announced on April 3rd, 2013 and will have up to one year from then to use the scholarship.

How will the competition be judged?
Our panel of judges will select the top videos, and then we’ll open voting lines via our Facebook page.  More info on our judging panel in the coming weeks!

How many winners will there be?
This year, there will be two competition winners. The first place winner will have his/her program fee waived for any destination (up to a $2,400 value). And the runner-up will receive a 50% discount off the program fee for any destination (up to a $1,200 value)

Program Director, Argentina:Katie, a US native, had traveled to Buenos Aires on several extended trips before the city’s lure became too strong and she decided to call it home. Long fascinated by the global scene, Katie earned a degree in International Studies from Miami University and spent time studying and living in Madrid, Spain. She then worked in marketing for an international board game company followed by a brief foray as an online community editor for several websites before joining the Connect-123 team. Still a tourist at heart herself, Katie loves watching newcomers discover the charm of Buenos Aires and takes great pleasure in helping them make the most out of their work and volunteer opportunities while experiencing everything this dynamic city has to offer.
