Meet Barcelona Journalism Intern Hannah Buck

By Steven Levy

Journalism intern Hannah Buck shares her plans for the summer in Barcelona.

About two months ago I had absolutely no idea how I would be spending summer 2012. I had just finished a teaching assistantship in the south of France, and after a year of constant travelling and new experiences I was slowly becoming conscious of the fact that reality (ie. the fantastic British weather, boredom, my cat clawing at my face in early in the morning because he wants feeding, etc. etc.) was ready and waiting to slap me round the face as soon as I drove off the other side of the Eurotunnel.

So in a mad panic I started frantically researching internships abroad online. My main area of interest was travel journalism (this interest has kind of been amplified by the repulsion I now feel for teaching – I fail to understand why at one point I thought 8 hours a day of 20 or so teenagers giggling at the supposed meaning of the word ‘sheet’ might actually be fun). And I was particularly attracted by the idea of Barcelona – I love the city, I love the beach, I love art, and with French and Italian (nearly) under my belt I felt it was time to move on to Spanish.

Then I found Connect-123. After a bit of a rush to get my references and other documentation collected together, considering it was the end of May and I wanted to start in June (last minute is a bit of a personal speciality), Lea managed to find me a journalism internship with Stoke Travel. Stoke are a pretty zany travel company that allow young people to surf, ski, party and experience many major festivals on a budget (often this budget includes unlimited amounts of beer and sangria; obviously it’s important to get a taste for local produce).

So how am I spending summer 2012? The Running of the Bulls. La Tomatina. Surf camps. San Vino – the wine throwing festival. Boat parties, beach parties and all the while writing about my experiences and publishing it online as a marketing activity. Tomorrow morning while my friends are dodging black cabs on their way to their London internships, I will be dodging black bulls in Pamplona. Needless to say, I’m feeling a little bit smug…

Read more of Hannah’s adventures, like her account of the San Vino festival.
