Where Are They Now: Cape Town alum Max Fish shares her international work and travel experiences
By Sarah Dilworth
In just over a year since her cardiothoracic internship in Cape Town, Maxine Fish has travelled various parts of the world, finished her graduate degree, and is back living abroad for work!
Where in the world are you currently located?
I am currently employed by a British Consulting agency called Renoir Consulting, and am based out of London UK. However, I am currently on a seven month project in Jakarta, Indonesia.
What is your favourite memory of your Connect-123 experience?
My favourite memory of my Connect-123 experience would be witnessing my first open heart surgery. The overall environment, the people, the scene; it was all mesmerising and extremely efficient and impressive.
What have you been up to since your internship?
Since my internship, I finished my MSc degree, spent a few months surfing in South Africa and Mozambique, and am now living in Jakarta for this consulting project. For this job I have also travelled to both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
How has your internship experience impacted your career and/or academic path?
I think my internship impacted me in the sense that it confirmed my desire to work in a healthcare-related field. My goal is to work in predominantly healthcare consulting, and perhaps eventually work my way up to partnering a consulting agency. It taught me a lot about how others operate, and how managerial fields need to work better with hands-on medical practitioners to deliver the best care possible, regardless of the field.
Why would you recommend doing an international internship?
I would definitely recommend doing an international internship. I met some amazing people and gained some valuable insights. It’s a great way to see a new part of the world as well.
