When I signed up for Connect-123's Dublin internship program I had never traveled abroad before, much less lived and worked abroad for 8 weeks. I had always wanted to visit Ireland and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so while getting some work experience at the same time. But I was worried--about navigating a foreign country, about not knowing any of the people traveling with me, and about whether my internship would be a good fit. Facing those fears led to some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As a neuroscience student interested in a research career, I was seeking placement in a lab where I could learn some new lab procedures and practice my scientific writing skills. Connect-123 found me a great internship at a neuroimmunology research lab. My coworkers were friendly, my work was interesting, there was always something to do, and I gained an understanding of the subject matter that supplemented and strengthened what I'd learned in my classes. Outside the lab, I found myself exploring Dublin and the rest of the country both on my own and with the new friends I made in the Connect-123 program. I've come back feeling more confident in myself, more useful in the lab, and more cognizant of the world outside the US.

Before my arrival to Buenos Aires, I was extremely nervous (anyone would be!). I spoke little Spanish and knew no one in Argentina. Upon meeting my Connect-123 advisor, all those nervous feelings melted away! She made me feel completely comfortable and told me to embrace the city. I am a fourth year nursing major in Boston so I wanted a volunteer experience that would place me back into healthcare, and she found me the perfect internships. I worked in two different hospitals, each providing a different view on healthcare. The first was a public hospital with few resources, but the nurses welcomed me and taught me everything they knew. The second hospital was also public, but resembled something from the United States! Here, it was the doctors who took me under their wing to observe surgeries, assist gynecologists, and rotate throughout the hospital. Overall, I believe my experience in Buenos Aires really opened my eyes to both the beauty of healthcare, and that of Buenos Aires’ amazing porteño culture. Not only were my healthcare skills sharpened, but I returned to the States with my Spanish much improved and waiting for my chance to go back!

Doing a five-month internship in Cape Town was one of the best decisions of my life. Admittedly, when I first decided to go abroad, Cape Town wasn’t on my radar; I was considering London or Australia. But I knew a Connect-123 participant in Cape Town at the time, and between a brief email conversation and looking through her photos on Facebook, I was sold. Both of the people from Connect who helped me were incredibly helpful, clear and fast at responding to emails. Though I am studying journalism, I wanted to try something different and ended up at a word-of-mouth marketing agency. It was a great fit. I created content plans for our clients’ Facebook pages, made survey calls, input statistics for feedback reports, helped brainstorm ideas for campaigns, learned about social media analytics tools, and found influencers ranging from fashionistas to foodies. I learned a lot and they kept me busy, making me feel a part of the team. Overall, Connect made things very easy. Since I was already stressed about my visa application, flight plans and more, it was so reassuring to be able to move into an apartment that already had furniture, bed lines and towels, and kitchenware provided. I also took advantage of several of the excursions and activities they planned, such as Boulders Beach (penguins!), Cape Point, and Cape of Good Hope; wine tasting in Constantia; and Seal Island. Outside of Connect, some of my other activities included hiking Lion’s Head and numerous trails on Table Mountain, skydiving, paragliding, sand boarding, visiting Robben Island, doing a safari at a game lodge, learning yoga, volunteering with children from the townships, volunteering at the Oranjezicht City Farm Saturday market, eating copious amounts of meat at braais, and doing a road trip along the Garden Route. So if you’re reading this and considering going to Cape Town, absolutely do it, and have some biltong and a Savanna Dry for me!

I’ve really enjoyed my time in Dublin with Connect-123. I had the idea a year ago to try and combine an experience abroad with an internship, and I couldn’t be more glad that I did. Connect-123 really helped me along the way, since I had no idea where to start looking for internships in Dublin. They were really quick and efficient in their communication, and they were able to find me a position as a research assistant. My 3 months here were amazing, and I learned so much in my field of study and gained a lot of valuable experience. When you have an internship abroad you really get to meet a lot of locals in the workplace, which is a great way to become exposed to a country’s culture. If you’re thinking of doing an internship abroad, definitely contact Connect-123 with any inquiries. One thing I really liked about Connect-123 was they try to give the interns a chance to socialize among themselves by organizing events every week, but you also have the liberty to venture on your own; there’s no pressure one way or another. These past 3 months have absolutely flown by...I’m already planning another trip to come back!

Now 2 months after my internship, I am so happy to have chosen Barcelona as the place to live and work in. I interned for a tourism company and my job was to find new unique activities for people that visit Barcelona outside of the regular touristy things. It was awesome! I had the opportunity to try out some of these activities, my favorite one being the segway tour in the mountains. I also had the opportunity to work on my marketing skills such as blogs, social media and corporate presentations.  Connect-123 was great not only at finding me an awesome internship but also meeting other people who were interning in Barcelona as well. I met a lot of people and had the chance to get to explore Barcelona and other places with them. I am so happy so have taken the chance to build my resume and live in such an amazing city. Barcelona is so lively and there is always something to see and do.

My summer in Barcelona, Spain was an incredible experience that fostered growth both personally and professionally. Barcelona was a lively city with history, art, gorgeous beaches, and fantastic music. The culture ignited an excitement in me to learn more, experience more, and meet as many people as possible. The people I have met here are from all around the world. I have made friends from Russia, France, Spain, England, and Italy that I will have forever. There is nothing like meeting a few strangers and growing closer through traveling around Barcelona. La Sagrada Familia is magical, and Gaudi’s other work around the city is equally as breathtaking. The nightlife is unreal, often times the clubs do not even open until 2 AM. The city itself was catalyst for adventure and laughter. My internships showed me another side of Barcelona. I worked at a children's hospital and an outpatient facility for adults with mental illness. I saw a community come to support those in need. My internship showed me how Spanish culture facilitates rehabilitation for adults experiencing schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, and personality disorders. I ran an art therapy group session every Wednesday where I learned about their day-to-day lives, the stigma, the support from others, and their personal creativity. I learned how to be present and listen to those in care. The children’s hospital taught me the importance of compassion and bringing joy to children and their families in care. In the morning I would go to children’s hospital rooms and sit with them while their parents would get breakfast or take a break. Those moments with kids ranging from a few months old to thirteen, I will treasure forever. Sometimes all they wanted was someone to hold their hand as they slept, other times I talked with them and played games. In the afternoon I would go to the chemo/dialysis unit or the child psychiatric unit. Both were so drastically different but equally rewarding. I am so grateful to have this experience to remember them by. This experience was deeply impacting and I owe it all to Connect-123! Thank you all for la vida en Barcelona!

Fifty years from now, when you are (hopefully) peacefully retired in the place of your dreams, reflecting on your past experiences, your education, your work, your family, the friends you have made and the friends you have lost, the places you have visited and the places you will never see, what do you think will come to mind? In my mind, I will picture Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain in the summer of 2014. I will picture my internship at an organization that actively fought to eradicate the housing and economic crisis that began in 2007. A crisis, which, in Spain, resulted in the forceful evictions of thousands from their homes, left thousands more indebted to the banks for life, and even led some to take their own lives. I will picture myself, a 22-year-old university student from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee who at first struggled with language and communication, constantly stressing over research, work and cultural awareness, but who quickly adapted to an intimate work environment, becoming truly comfortable with immersion, and having the opportunity to contribute personal, meaningful, and useful work to the fight for housing rights in Spain. All this, still being able to have an unexplainable about of fun and adventure within Barcelona, around Spain, and throughout Europe and Africa. Lea and Steve Levy at Connect-123 gave me tools I needed to make my experience in Barcelona not only a memory I could happily look back on 50 years from now, but also a contribution to the city that will forever have an impact on the livelihood of its citizens. Without the help of Conncect-123, I would have never been able to be placed at an organization that fit my exact interests and aspirations for a summer internship abroad. To anyone who hopes to look back on their time abroad with a sense of accomplishment, personal growth, and unmatchable happiness, Connect-123 is the way to go. 11 out of 10.

I have always dreamed of coming to Spain. It was a pipe-dream, really, as I never thought I would actually be able to go. So, when I found out that my school was financing an internship in Barcelona through the Connect-123 program, I was dually dumbfounded and ecstatic! My eight-week experience here in Barcelona was the perfect balance of work and play. I worked for a think tank Foundation, where I worked on a research project for the duration of my internship. I wrote a (really long!) paper comparing the 2008 Global Financial Crisis's effects on employment in the European Union and the United States, and the ensuing strategies and policies proposed and enacted by the two in order to combat the high levels of unemployment. I learned quite a bit while researching and writing my paper, as well as realizing that I have a large interest in labor economics. My mornings were devoted to work, while my afternoons I spent relaxing at the beach, exploring the treasures of Barcelona, and working out. Some weekends I took day trips--Sitges, Tarragona, Tossa de Mar in Costa Brava--and I also visited Madrid. I also got to fuel my passion for being active by hiking Mount Tibidabo, Montjüic, and Montserrat. I had so many great experiences here, and I was very sad to leave--especially because I became really close with the other Connect-123 interns while living in Barcelona. I made really great friends with whom I plan to keep in touch. Thank you Connect-123, and Lea, for helping me transition into the Barcelona lifestyle, for introducing me to some great people, and for helping me find a wonderful internship. I grew a lot in my two months. I have fallen in love with this city, and I cannot wait to come back. Until then, adéu Barcelona!

Working with Connect-123 was as easy as 1, 2, 3, pun intended! Lea, our program director, was a great point of contact from the day we e-mailed her regarding information about Connect-123, processing our résumés to making sure we were set up properly in Barcelona. Lea walked us through the process of finding an internship that was fitted to our interests and skills with the least amount of burden on our side. Upon landing in Barcelona we met with Lea, where she gave us valuable lessons in the lifestyle and culture of Barcelona. On top of that Lea set up amazing outings that allowed us to see, feel, and even taste the culture of Cataluña! Working for a start-up has truly been an awakening experience. As an aspiring entrepreneur it has been a blessing to work under the leadership of the founder, whose ambition and determination to make his company a success is definitely contagious. What this start-up lacks in size and resources, it makes up in ingenuity and innovation. Overall my experience with Connect-123 has been pleasurable. Time has flown by without an incident, but it’s nice to know that Connect-123 has your back.

The education internship I was assigned to involved assisting primary school students with English conversational skills and secondary school students with Biology and Environmental Management lessons. It certainly allowed me to gain insights on the Argentinian education system, at the same time picking up soft skills for me to become an effective teacher in future. This experience has helped me to realize that learning is life-long. Even after 18 years of education in school, there are still many things I can learn. Things like language, interpersonal skills, responsibility, punctuality and patience are qualities beyond school education. And these are the exact attributes that can be achieved via an overseas internship. Besides, you will also be presented with the opportunity to discover Argentina’s breathtaking landscapes. In just two short months, I’ve travelled to Tigre, Cordoba, Rosario, Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Perito Moreno Glacier in El Calafate, Ushuaia (the world’s southernmost city), Iguazu Falls and Quebrada de Humahuaca in Salta/Jujuy. Even within Buenos Aires, it is not all work and no play. I got to attend a football match at the River Plate stadium and witnessed for myself the ecstatic atmosphere of Argentinian football. The food (especially meat!) is so delicious that I was always craving for more. Social events are also organized periodically for Connect-123 participants to touch base with one another. Add that to the amazing people you meet throughout the course of your internship, I can assure you there will be no lack of friends to interact with! That being said, it wasn’t a smooth journey throughout, otherwise I wouldn’t have benefitted like how I actually did. The biggest challenge I overcame was the language barrier. I was bold enough to arrive in Argentina with absolutely zero Spanish background. At times, it was a struggle to even get by. Nevertheless, I took 2 weeks of lessons and displayed the determination to learn. Thankfully, the teachers showed patience and the students were more than eager to teach me Spanish vocabulary. Everyone really does appreciate the fact that you are attempting to speak Spanish. By the last day, I even managed to craft and read out my farewell message entirely in Spanish! I would strongly recommend this internship to anyone who is keen to step out of his/her comfort zone. Anyone who is adventurous and willing to try new things, things that you never imagined you will accomplish. Anyone who is keen to develop relationships you would never have ever envisioned. Anyone who wants to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Lastly, anyone who wishes to have the time of their lives.

When I started university, I knew that I wanted to spend one semester abroad. I completed an internship in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Connect 123 this February-June so as to take a productive break from my studies and to truly think about what direction I was headed in. I chose Buenos Aires to improve my Spanish, experience living abroad and for its fascinating history amongst many more reasons. I knew that with my International Development Major and Women’s Studies Minor, work experience before graduation was necessary and that Argentina had a long and interesting past and current history in relation to women’s rights. I interned at two NGO’s. One dealt primarily with issues affecting women and children with HIV/AIDS. My responsibilities included looking for funding, compiling a master list with the funder’s requirements, explaining the grants and sending them to the organization as well as translation/revision of their entire website, many grant proposals, budgets and official e-mails. At this NGO, I learnt a lot about non-profit work in Argentina, the inner-workings of the United Nations, marketing, grant-writing, budget creation and translation. My supervisors were clear about their expectations and made feasible, yet ambitious goals. The second organization was a feminist non-profit that dealt with women’s rights in the context of domestic or any type of violence. I was more independent at this internship and initiated my own project, which was the creation of a blog for the organization. I also assisted them with a little bit of translation and writing up material/designing a program for workshops they held later in the year. When the workshops started, I assisted them in preparing and hosting their events. In both of my internships, I learnt greatly about women’s rights in Argentina, the inner-workings of NGOs and the impact both groups are making domestically and internationally. My level of Spanish also went from barely speaking to conversational fluent in a matter of months. My greatest challenges were of course, first, adjusting to the language switch and to a different working culture. In my free time, I met up with friends, attended Connect-123 or other events, explored the city and travelled to places all over South America and Argentina like Peru, Chile, Patagonia, Mendoza, Brazil and Uruguay. Buenos Aires is really the gateway to many exciting destinations over the continent and there are definitely ways to travel affordably. I made many incredible friends and took time to really enjoy and explore the city. I took the time to appreciate and think, which is something we all forget to do when we’re caught up with life. I loved everything about Argentina; the people, the food, the expressions, the places, the city, the music, the literature, my apartment, the nature, the culture, the language and more. Thank you to Paula and Katie from Connect-123 for warmly welcoming me to B.A. and helping me make the best of what the city had to offer. Taking a semester to do my internship and travel truly helped me confirm my career plans and take the time to consolidate my skills. I would highly suggest for anyone to get out of their comfort zone and pursue international opportunities like this one, so as to learn, be taught, share, travel and experience.

I have really enjoyed myself here in Shanghai. I was expecting to like it and instead I have loved it. I have met some wonderful people at both my accommodation and at work. The nightlife is incredible, never experienced anything like it. The city itself is spectacular, I have always lived in a big city, London, but this place really took my breathe away. Skyscrapers everywhere mixed in with old authentic streets. You can feel absorbed in a Buddhist temple and look ahead and see a huge glass skyscraper. It's bizarre but really interesting. If the hustle and bustle gets too much, Shanghai has some amazing parks, my two favorites being Century Park and my local Zhongshan Park. You can also take short day trips to more scenic locations such as Hangzhou. Its so well connected that its even possible to take weekend trips to places like Beijing. There is always so much happening in Shanghai, the city feels so energized and alive, you can't help but feel it rub off on you. I have never been bored here, the metro is simple and accessible so if you have a metro card there is no reason to be bored. If you are worried about a culture shock, no need, Shanghai is very multicultural, may not be on the same scale as London, but nearly every time I am in a carriage in the metro there will be another ethnic minority in there with me. Chinese people are very used to Europeans here, there are large ex pact communities here, so no-one stares at you, I have very rarely felt uncomfortable here. My work has been a useful step for me in what I want to do in the future, I am so happy I took the opportunity to come and work here, a completely different experience to being a tourist and something I will never forget. It has really made me want to pursue a career that will provide a lot of opportunities abroad.

I went to Barcelona in November 2013 full of hopes and expectations. I hoped to improve my Spanish, meet new people, and get some volunteering experience. I was very nervous when I arrived there, it was the first time I was travelling on my own, and I didn’t know anybody in the city in the northern Spain. It turned out that there was no reason to be nervous, although that is probably hard to avoid. I moved into a flat with students, and they introduced me to a lot of people from different countries that I am still in contact with. With these people, I have had the most amazing experiences in Barcelona, exploring the beautiful city and making trips together. I began taking Spanish classes to improve the Spanish that I had learned in high school. These were very helpful, but I found out that it was also important speaking Spanish outside the school, to try to get a certain level of fluency. Furthermore, I got experience as a volunteer. The first three months I worked in a children’s hospital. There, I would entertain the children while their parents weren’t there. It was relevant for me because I am going to study medicine. After that, I volunteered at a place that offers opportunities to children with few resources and their families. I learned a lot from that; I saw a lot of children in different situations, and I could see how good it was for them to be helped by the organization. I had planned to stay in Barcelona for three months. I ended up being there for six months. It was the time of my life.

Where do I even begin? Connect-123 truly gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. I was down in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for three months working in the mental health unit of a local hospital. To be honest, it was not love at first sight – I really had to let the hospital, the patients, and the culture, all grow on me. My time in Buenos Aires gave me a clearer perspective of the direction I wanted to take my life in. I gained an incredible amount of experience and knowledge in a relatively short amount of time, something I do not think I could have done back home. Working in the hospital provided me with invaluable clinical experience that will absolutely help me in the future as I continue to build my career. The doctors I met and the bonds I created were remarkable, and I honestly cannot wait to apply what I learned in BA back in the states. Living in Buenos Aires really changed me as a person. I met so many people, created such strong friendships, and go to know myself on a deeper level. Sometimes when you are stuck in the mundane routine of your life you lose exactly that – life. But when you are in a different country trying out new things and building professional experience you are overcome with energy and a renewed sense of purpose. You stop to admire the parks within the city, you take a thirty minute bus ride to the café that caught your eye, you read and write things you did not know you were capable of. I even got to travel to Iguazu Falls and Patagonia during my time there! Although it was only three months, this experience was life-changing and definitely something I would do again in a heartbeat. If you have the opportunity to participate in this program, do it. Whatever is holding you back and making you question it, throw it away and do it. You will be happy you did.

I found Connect-123 through a Google search after my mother suggested (probably not too seriously) that I find a publishing internship in Ireland. I'd been wanting to visit the Emerald Isle for years and was struggling to find internship opportunities here in the states after my junior year of college. After talking it over with my parents and some extensive research, I began the process of working with C123 to find me an internship. I originally worked with Melanie and then Liat who both helped me find an internship at a textbook publisher in Dublin, and the experience could not have been more wonderful. I spent three months there (May to August of 2013). I felt like my work at my internship was meaningful and everyone on the staff was friendly and willing to teach me. Office life was lively and fun. The staff loved any excuse to bring in cake, and I even got to witness a daring pigeon rescue that involved the head of editorial chasing a pigeon around on the roof. Thanks to everyone there, I managed to get a second internship on my college campus when I got back home. C123 also helped make my experience in Ireland amazing. The people of Connect 123 are not only concerned about their interns' well-being, but they also work hard to make sure we all get to connect with each other. C123 organized many trips in Dublin and around Ireland, such as a weekend to Co. Clare to see the Cliffs of Moher and the seaside town of Lahinch and a Literary Pub Crawl. Thanks to C123's care and sense of adventure, I can now boast that I once went on a 12 km hike through the mountains after a night of pub-hopping. I made good friends both in Dublin and in the program, many of whom I still keep in touch with months later. Working with Connect 123 so that I could achieve my dream of visiting Ireland and gaining invaluable experience in my desired field was truly one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I still miss walking the lively streets of Dublin.

I was lucky enough to graduate college in three years, which provided me with a senior-year-but-not to do something worthwhile before looking for jobs and applying for graduate programs. I knew that I wanted an international internship and knew that I of course wanted it to be in Buenos Aires. Using those two terms as the material of the Google search that would change my life, I found Connect-123. My Buenos Aires Experience 2.0 was the most amazing thing I have ever done. My internship with an NGO analyzing corporate responsibility was simultaneously challenging, interesting, and relevant to what I want to do in life. I’m also leaving with a level of Spanish far above the one I came with, accomplishing my number one goal for this trip. I fell in love with everything for real this time, and I truly feel like I became part of the eclectic city. The people, the culture, the steak, the nightlife- I absolutely love it all. I worked here, stayed here, and really actually lived here. I truly thank Connect-123 for providing me with the opportunity to have my perfect argentine experience.

My several months in Buenos Aires, Argentina were an incredible experience that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. As a recent college graduate with a degree in Finance and Spanish, this was a perfect opportunity that allowed me to transition into life after graduation. As a former Division I athlete, spending a semester abroad was never an option, but I was convinced it was something I needed to do. Fortunately, my work abroad experience turned out to be even more rewarding that a semester abroad could have been. Using Connect-123's impressive professional network I was able to find the perfect internship experience working at a brand new venture capital fund under the guidance of an experienced entrepreneur. The work I did was highly rewarding and absolutely fascinating as I was able to meet countless ambitious entrepreneurs and analyze close to a dozen radically different companies. This has carried over seamlessly back into the US, as I have received some great attention from prospective employers as a result of this experience. Living in Buenos Aires also enabled me to experience the incredible porteño culture, gain a high level of Spanish fluency and forge several strong friendships. I was also able to take several weekend trips to world-famous destinations such as Mendoza, Iguazú Falls, and Punta del Este. I experienced so much in less than four months, that I feel as if I gained at least a year of valuable life experience. I owe a great deal of thanks to the Connect-123 staff for making this all possible!

I went to Barcelona for three months to take a productive break from university. I chose Barcelona because I had travelled there once before, for only two days, and I promised myself I would go back for a longer period of time. I was placed at an amazing internship by Connect-123. I worked for three months as a GIS Intern for a freelance engineer, at a coworking space in Gracia, Barcelona. Before I was placed in my internship I knew very little about coworking spaces, but as a part of my assigned tasks, I was able to help in the startup of an organization of coworkings - a practice I found very interesting. My internship was multifaceted. A another part of it, I was given the opportunity to learn GIS software and with that new knowledge, I made maps of Gracia, Barcelona as well as a map for a tourists with routes from their touristic flat to major sights nearby. Seeing my maps printed, and presenting them on my final day at the internship was so incredibly rewarding. While I spent the weekdays at my internship, I devoted the weekends to seeing as much as I could. I took advantage of the travel deals and discount airlines I could find and went for weekend trips to Belgium, Morocco, the South of Spain and Gibraltar, Portugal, and Andorra. In each of the places I travelled, I met people in my hostels to tour with and go out on the town. I found that it was super easy to make friends in the hostels, as we all had something in common - we love to travel. My favorite of the trips was to Marrakech, Morocco - although I got very sick (be careful what you eat), Morocco was the one place I knew I wanted to visit while abroad. The other trips I based on the input of the people I met abroad. Everyone around me and at my internship was very helpful with travel advice. Taking time off from school to intern abroad is very likely one of the best decisions I have made. I learned a lot at my internship as well as while traveling. I gained experience I never would have otherwise.

My time in Dublin was a life-changing experience. For a long time, it has been my dream to travel to Ireland and when I stumbled upon Connect-123, while doing Internet searches for internship abroad opportunities, I knew that dream would finally become a reality. As soon as I submitted my application, Connect-123 started making my dream come true. The coordinators helped me every step of the way, throughout the process. When looking for internships, I wanted to find something that allowed me to work with children who had autism, but when talking to Connect-123, I was not sure if that would be possible. Connect had never placed an intern in an autism center before, but they would do what they could to find a perfect place for me. After some time, Connect-123 found the perfect internship for me at a preschool for children who have autism. With that news, I was thrilled to start my adventure and life-changing experience in Dublin, Ireland. While in Ireland, I was able to not only explore Dublin, but also much of Ireland. I spent every weekend traveling to different parts of Ireland-Giants Causeway, Belfast, Cork, Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, and so many other beautiful wonders of Ireland. Through different events Connect coordinated (drinks at local pubs, 4th of July BBQ, etc.), I was able to meet other Connect interns and from that, I found people to travel around Ireland with and explore Dublin with. While in Dublin, I became a more independent person and was introduced to the Irish culture. My zest for travel was met through interning in Dublin. For the month I was in Dublin, I loved every minute of it. I am so thankful for the assistance I received from Connect-123 and for the wonderful internship they found for me. After my time in Dublin, I have made up my mind to work with children who have autism, as my future career. I enjoyed everything about the preschool and the children. I met wonderful people at my host organization and discovered more about myself. Because of Connect-123, I was able to have an amazing experience!
